Totally agree. We went for a friend's birthday and had a fantastic night. SO MUCH FUN! The food was delicious, service excellent and the atmosphere- well, it was special and a sense of occasion. You must go once- especially with friends visiting they will remember it! A year on we still laugh about it

Shelia Delve of Brooklands (29/01/2007) says....

it was faaaaaaaaaaaantastic - the food was gorgeous and plentiful, the staff were amazing and we had a brilliant time. We varied in age, from 26 to 63 - it didn't matter. What a great place, what a great night out - entertainment was real good fun. Can't wait to go again.

Wine and Dine
Your reporter monthly guide to eating out

The atmosphere at Thai- E-sarn is fantastic. The decor was wonderful and a sense of enjoyment from the customers gives the restaurant in West Didsbury a warm and cosy feel. Instantly greeted by a face of a young, attractive woman, I asked her if she knew where Wendy, the manager was and that she was expecting me. She then looked at me smugly and said "Sorry I don't work here." She then carried out her route from the toilet to her table where she continued dining.

"Oh dear, ever so sorry," I replied.

The smiling face of Wendy followed and she soon had us sitting down with two bottles of Singha Thai Beer.

After leaving us to ponder over the menu a while, Wendy returned to take out order. For starters, I had Gra-Dook Moo, deep fried marinated spare ribs with garlic. There were absolutely delicious. The best I have tasted. My associate had Esarn sausages, Grilled Eastern style and served with garlic and lemon grass. Different, but very nice.

With our appetites wetted and our glasses empty, Wendy was soon at our table again, clearing away our dishes and fetching another two bottles of Singha Beer.

Wendy recommended the excellent Ho Mok Talay, mixed seafood consisting of scallops, tiger king prawns, mussels and squid, all wrapped together in a curry coconut cream past with sweet basil.

I decided that wanted to try my favourite Thai dish, Green Tiger Prawn Curry, and in all the Thai restaurants I have visited, I have known none that have had tiger prawns as big as Thai E-sarn's. The dish also came with scallops to add a little more interest to the meal.

Wendy has two restaurants that offer the same excellent services. There is a 15 per cent discount on Take-away orders for over 10 pound and a ten per cent student discount for dining in.

CITY LIFE - Thai E-Sarn Classic

"Unassuming little restaurant in Shouth Manchester which serves surprisingly excellent food. Good for vegetarians."

Manchester's Chinatown is widely recognised as the finest in the country.

It has always had a unique atmosphere which is the nearest a Mancunian can get to the mysteries of the Orient without experiencing Asia for real with a ticket from Cathay Pacific.

In the early part of this decade, the most interesting openings in the area were serving Japanese or Thai food rather than Chinese, but more recently there have been some big name arrivals. There has never been a better time to be a lover of Oriental food in Manchester.

Wok and roll with the King and I

Diner at Manchester Thai restaurant are getting all shook up when their host takes top the floor to entertain them with her rendition of Elvis Presley's hits.

After cooking up a feast of rice and noodles, Peanporn Beddard (Wendy) - the owner of the Thai E-sarn in Didsbury serves up a feast of musical hits from her Memphis idol.

Peanporn, 41, better known to her customers as Wendy, has been serenading her customers ever since leaving Thailand to set up shop in Manchester.

"I love Elvis and I want to sing like him to make my guests happy and show love to them," she said from her restaurant in Burton road. "If they ask me, or if there is a party, I come out and I sing my favourites for them. Then they can sing for me."

"I dress as Shirley Bassey, not Elvis because I tried being Elvis once and I think a Thai woman looks funny. It is the song that are important, the emotion, that I want to recreate."

Wendy's favourite number is Are you lonesome tonight which, she says, reminds her of how her heart was once broken.

This restaurant is an absolute must if you like your Shirley Bassey and Elvis... it's loud, it's karaoke, it's great fun and it's thoroughly recommended. Wendy, the Manageress, shares her passion for the classics by managing persuade even the most shy or tone deaf patrons to sing their hearts out shamelessly within this tiny little restaurant.

You may think that the food is irrelevany amidst this level of debauchery, but fear not, you are gauranteed have a delicious meal as well. The menu is extensive and the service unsurpassed in its warmth and friendliness. A gem.
